Garnier is one of those names that are extremely popular in the beauty industry.
It is a brand that can be found in your bathroom cabinet or vanity, without you even realizing that you own it. Why? Because it is one of those brands that have stuck around for so long, they have become a constant in people’s personal care.
So when you pick a hair color or a night cream, chances are it will be from Garnier.
And as always, my job is to evaluate if such brands really deserve this sort of popularity. So is Garnier cruelty-free and vegan in 2021? Let us see!
Is Garnier Cruelty-Free?
No! Garnier is not cruelty-free. It is a brand that will allow third parties to conduct animal testing on its products when required.
We know that this is a red flag that cannot be ignored. “Oh we do not do it, but we surely turn a blind eye when someone else does it, and even make money out of it!” So you see, this is how a brand cannot skip accountability for cruelty against animals!
Alfred Amour Garnier, a French creator, founded Garnier in 1904. Back then, it was known as Laboratoires Garnier. Its first-ever product was a plant-based lotion for hair, called La Lotion Garnier.
Among the many firsts, it is a significant name in creating revolutionary products. Garnier, in fact, was one of the first producers of sun-care and protection products. It was also the first to create a home hair color that was permanent in 1960.
Over the years since its inception, it has only moved forward in creating new and better products. Most of its launches have been a huge success. But its haircare products and skincare items are what define the brand for what it is today.
Garnier is also well-loved for its availability and affordability. It is globally recognized as one of the top beauty brands.
Is Garnier Owned by a Parent Company?
Yes. Garnier’s parent company is L’Oréal S. A. It is a French personal care and cosmetic brand. It acquired Garnier in 1965 for an amount that has not been disclosed yet.
L’Oréal S. A. owns about 36 brands, including Maybelline New York. To this date, Garnier remains one of the biggest brands that L’Oréal owns.
Testing Policy: Does Garnier Test on Animals?
Garnier does not conduct animal testing for its products by themselves anywhere in the world. But it does allow authorities to test its products on animals under circumstances where it is required.
I can say this as Garnier follows the animal testing policy of its parent company, L’Oréal. And there it states so, take a look yourself!
Does Garnier Sell in China?
This is confusing, as in Garnier’s FAQ section it states that it does not sell in China. However, in its animal testing policy, which is basically of L’Oréal, it does not deny being sold in China. So it is quite unclear if it is still sold in China or not.
To be on the safe side, it is good to assume that even if it does not sell in China, it is still not cruelty-free. This is because it has no animal testing policy of its own but still follows that of L’Oréal.
Is Garnier Certified by PETA?
No. Garnier is not certified by PETA. As a matter of fact, Garnier is not listed under any category on PETA’s website, which kind of makes it fall within the grey zone.
Because it is not certified by PETA or other similar organizations, it just supports the fact that Garnier is not cruelty-free.
Is Garnier Vegan?
No. Garnier is not an entirely vegan brand. But it has some products with vegan formulations, and those are labeled so as well.
Its Ultimate Blends line is mostly vegan. Some of its vegan products are listed below:
- Garnier Papaya Hair Food Shampoo
- Garnier Delicate Oat Heat Protection Spray For Dry Hair
- Garnier Organic Lavandin Anti Age Night Cream
- Garnier Organic Thyme Perfecting Toner
- Garnier Organic Argan Multi Use Rescue Balm
Is Garnier Gluten-Free?
Well, Garnier claims that most of its products are free of gluten, but not all. So it is not completely gluten-free.
This is why it is wise to check the list of ingredients always!
Is Garnier Paraben-Free?
No. It is not 100% percent paraben-free. But it has a line of products that are completely free of parabens.
Garnier’s Whole Blends Paraben-Free products is a line that can help you find products free of parabens!
Is Garnier Hypoallergenic?
No. Garnier is not a hypoallergenic brand. But it has a range of products to suit sensitive skin types!
If you are interested, be sure to check the label! Especially if you are allergic to certain ingredients, you should not take a risk.
