Is NYX Cruelty-Free and Vegan in 2022?

I am sure that if not anything else, the name of the brand has dragged you here.

How loved is NYX? So, so well loved. It has really changed the drugstore brand game since its inception. The quality and the performance of its products outshine that of multiple high-end brands.

From eyeliners to base makeup, each product is crafted to give the consumer the best experience. But is Nyx cruelty-free and vegan in 2020? This is important to find out if you want to continue loving the brand.

So, let us find out!

Is NYX Cruelty-Free?

Yes! NYX Professional Makeup is a 100 percent cruelty-free brand. It does not test its ingredients or finished products on animals.

Yay! Glad to know that NYX Professional Makeup does not conduct animal testing under any circumstances. So, yes, the brand is completely cruelty-free!

About NYX

Toni Ko founded NYX back in 1999. The brand received its name after the Greek Goddess Nyx, who was the goddess of the night. The brand began with 6 eyeliners and around 12 lip pencils. Priced quite cheap, they were a hit and sold out immediately!

The Jumbo Eyeliners followed, bringing in about a whopping revenue of 2 million US dollars. That too, within a year of its inception. Initially, NYX Professional Makeup, as the name suggests, was targeted at makeup professionals.

But not the brand has globally expanded to the point that it markets professional level makeup under the drugstore label. NYX Professional Makeup undoubtedly is popular because of the quality and price point.

Currently, it is retailed all over US and also is available globally.

Is NYX Owned by a Parent Company?

Yes. NYX Professional Makeup is owned by L’Oréal USA Inc. It acquired NYX in 2014 when Toni Ko sold the brand to it for 500 million US dollars.

L’Oréal USA Inc. is a company that specializes in beauty and personal care products. A part of the French L’Oréal S A company, it owns many beauty brands. That includes Garnier, Maybelline and more.

Testing Policy: Does NYX Test on Animals?

No. NYX Professional Makeup does not test its ingredients or finished products on animals. It does not have an animal testing policy that I could see. But its website ensures that its products are never tested on animals.

Not just the finished products, but the ingredients as well are not tested on animals! And it does not budge from its cause no matter the circumstances!

Does NYX Sell in China?

No! NYX Professional Makeup does not sell its products in China. Confusions were created after the brand was acquired by L’Oréal which is not cruelty-free and sells in China. But NYX made no changes to its policy and remains cruelty-free.

Here is a snippet from an article published by PETA on the matter:

Is NYX Certified by PETA?

Yes! If it is not obvious already, NYX is certified by PETA as a cruelty-free brand. NYX Cosmetics remains a part of PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies program even after being acquired by L’Oréal.

NYX also bears PETA’s Global Beauty Without Bunnies Logo. If you visit PETA’s website, this is what you will find about NYX:

Is NYX Vegan?

Not entirely. But NYX does have a line of makeup that has been completely formulated to be vegan-friendly. That means that the brand does offer a fair number of vegan products for you to enjoy.

If you are a vegan like me, it is safe to strictly stick to this formulation!

Is NYX Gluten-Free?

No. The brand does not confirm to be completely gluten-free. But as far as I am concern, there are a few products by the brand that are gluten-free.

Since there is no concrete evidence on this matter, you should avoid the brand if you are allergic.

Is NYX Paraben-Free?

Not entirely. It is not a paraben-free brand as some of its products have parabens in them. But that also means that some are free of parabens.

This is why you should do your research before you purchase a NYX product if you are concerned about parabens.

Is NYX Hypoallergenic?

No. NYX is not a hypoallergenic brand. There is not much information available on its hypoallergenic state.

That means that if you are interested in buying NYX products, you should reach out to the brand to discuss your concerns.

Alternative Brands to NYX

Well, NYX Professional Makeup is an outstanding brand, for sure. However, since all of its products are not vegan, you may want to opt for a completely cruelty-free and vegan brand.

So here are a few options!

  • e. l. f. Cosmetics: The reason why e. l. f. Cosmetics comes up a lot in my recommendations because it is a completely cruelty-free and vegan brand. And because it is also a drugstore brand, the price point is quite attractive too!
  • Pacifica: This is another cruelty-free and vegan brand that you will love. This uses natural ingredients to formulate its products, so that should take care of you any additional concern. It is also very affordable!

Fact Check

Now, I will be doing the final fact check. So buckle up!
